How To Use A Sphygmomanometer

A sphygmomanometer is a device used when taking blood pressure readings. This all-important part ensures that correct readings are taken and you can correctly identify the details of the patient's state at present. It inflates a rubber cuff that's wrapped around the patient's wrist or upper arm until no blood can flow through the brachial or radial artery. This is how blood pressure readings are taken, and with this device, doctors can ensure the accuracy of the results. Read to find out more about using these tools

Taking Readings

When the air begins to release from the inflated cuff, blood starts to flow through the artery again. People who are otherwise healthy but at an increased risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease, can benefit from checkups using these devices. Whether at home or alongside a medical professional, these are used around the world daily to ensure accurate health monitoring can be done.

Twice A Day

When you have a medical issue that requires you to check your pressure regularly, you need to take readings at least two times a day to ensure accuracy. For ideal measurements and comparisons, you should try to take them at the same time each day. Take the first measurement when you wake up in the morning, before taking on activity or eating, which can both fuel and rev up your body. Take the second measurement before your final meal of the day, and always try to measure an empty bladder as you must be calm for an accurate reading.

Get Comfortable

Ideally, try to sit in a chair, in a comfortable space with your back supported, legs open and feet flat on the ground. This allows your body to be resting and gives you a standard, baseline reading. This is important because you need to know what your rating pressure is to understand how an increase or decrease will affect it, and what it indicates about your health.

Position Your Arm

When taking blood pressure readings, always try to use the same arm for consistency. Rest it up on an even surface, like a table or armrest, holding your forearm at about heart level. The cuff should be quite tight around your arm, but not so tight as to cause discomfort, directly above the bend in your elbow.

Two To Three Readings

Maintain your body positioning and try not to talk too much while the readings are being taken. Record each reading and time of taking it carefully, while letting the cuff fully deflate. After a few minutes, take another test for certainty. Multiple readings are needed to ensure a stable reading and a clear indicator of issues.
